Man Utd 3 -0 West Ham

United moved into 3rd spot thanks to some 3-0 victory over West Ham United at Old Trafford. Goals from Wayne Rooney, Nani and Dimitar Berbatov gave the Red Devils victory which leaves the Hammers bottom of the table after 3 matches.

Sir Alex Ferguson made 3 adjustments to the team who drew at Fulham the previous match with Nani, Giggs and Rooney coming in for Park, Valencia and Hernandez.

The visitors’ defensive formation made it tough for United to create any good chances in the opening stages of the game. Despite this United continued to exert pressure and within the 24th minute Nani was denied by the crossbar. A lengthy cross area pass from Vidic was aimed at Berbatov, who beautifully back-heeled the ball directly to Nani who struck a 20 yard shot. Robert Green couldn’t get a clear hold of the ball but he managed to get enough on it to push it onto the crossbar.

Man Utd 2 – 1 Liverpool

Manchester United came from behind to retain their slender lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory to all but kill Rafa Benitezs “guarantee” of 4th spot this term.

Park Ji-Sung produced the winner after an hour, after Wayne Rooney’s 33rd goal of the season had brought them on level terms with Fernando Torres’ fifth-minute opener.

With Chelsea drawing with Blackburn a few hours later it meant United went two points clear of Arsenal and four points of Chelsea (who have a game in hand). It was a nervy game for United but Liverpool have stood still as a team since their victory in the corresponding fixture last season.

Man Utd 3 – 0 Fulham

Wayne Rooney (who else?!) fired United back to the top of the Premier League as his brace inspired a 3-0 win over Fulham.

The previous day United had been knocked off the top spot by Chelsea beating West Ham comprehensively 4-1 but Rooney struck 30 seconds after half-time at Old Trafford (much as he did mid-week against AC Milan) and took his goal tally to 32 in the closing stages of the match.

CL: Man Utd 4 – 0 AC Milan

For United legend David Beckham there was no fairytale Old Trafford return as United cruised into the Champions League quarter-finals after a 4-0 win over AC Milan.

Rooney again was the chief tormentor as he scored a goal in each half brining his goal tally for the season upto 30 and killing any chance Milan had of Beckham leading them to victory on his former stomping ground.

Instead, it was United who killed the game as Ji-Sung Park ran onto Scholes’ pass to further widen the gap before Darren Fletcher headed a fourth near the end to truly humiliate Milan.

Carling Cup Final: Aston Villa 1 – 2 Manchester United

United came from behind today to win their second consecutive League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium.
The game started ominously for United when Aston Villa had a penalty in the 4th minute. Ashley Young played in Gabriel Agbonlahor with the ball over the top. Agbonlahor then raced towards the penalty box with Vidic chasing him frantically. Having tried to tug his shirt he then tackled and bought down Villa’s striker very clumsily giving the refree no choice but to point to the spot. Villa boss Martin O’Neill could be seen mouthing he should be sent off. Luckily Vidic didn’t receive a card. Milner stepped up and thumped the ball into right-hand side of the goal: 1-0 to Villa.

It needed the goal for United to get into their stride and it took all of eight minutes for them to get their equaliser. Dimitar Berbatov took the ball from Richard Dunne high on the right wing and rushed towards goal. Dunne managed to backtrack and get the ball away from Berbatov just as he got into the box Unfortunately for him though the ball fell straight to Owen, who placed the ball first time right into the right hand post: 1-1.

Man Utd 3 – 0 West Ham

United erased memories of Saturdays performance against Everton as they returned to within one point of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League. Wayne Rooney has had a habit of scoring goals with his head recently (five headed goals in the last seven games) and today was no different as he grabbed another brace in a comfortable 3-0 win against West Ham.

As per usual Sir Alex made some changes to his starting eleven with Ben Foster surprisingly picked in goal. Nemanja Vidic, Darron Gibson, Paul Scholes and Anderson also returned but there was no place for van der Sar and Rio Ferdinand in the squad possibly with Sundays Carling Cup final in mind.

AC Milan 2 – 3 Man Utd

Despite the shock of conceding an early goal United recovered to take charge of the last-16 first tie against AC Milan.

However, Milan gave themselves a semblance of hope to progress further when Clarence Seedorf pulled a goal back in the final five minutes.

Before the game all the talk was about David Beckham taking on his former team-mates for the first time since leaving Old Trafford. All week Beckham had been very complimentary about United showing he will always be a Red at heart. The former Red Devils hero was named in Milan’s starting line-up despite being on the bench for his teams previous two games, while Rio Ferdinand returned to the visitors’ defence.

Man Utd 5 – 0 Portsmouth

In a see-saw season for the title United reclaimed top spot in the Premier League emphatically crushing Portsmouth 5-0 at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney was again the orchestrator as he put United in front with his 23rd goal of the season. Anthony Vanden Borre’s then turned the ball into his own net to give United a comfortable lead going into half-time.

Michael Carrick’s shot looped up off Richard Hughes and beat David James for another own goal, before Berbatov added a clinical fourth and Marc Wilson volleyed into his own net (yes, that’s right three own goals in the game!) to complete the rout.

Arsenal 1 – 3 Man Utd

United narrowed the gap on League leaders Chelsea as the champions stormed to an impressive 3-1 win against title rivals Arsenal.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side stunned Arsenal with two stunning goals in four minutes in the first half at the Emirates and never looked like surrendering their lead.

Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia tipped Nani’s chipped cross cum shot into his own net before Rooney put the champions in cruise control with his 100th Premier League goal.

Park Ji-Sung added United’s third goal in the second half to allow United to close the gap to one point between Chelsea.

Rooney, yet again, showed the predatory instincts that make him, the most lethal forward in the world on current form, aided by Portugal winger Nani, who ran the Arsenal defence ragged with a superb display.

Man Utd 4 – 0 Hull

Wayne Rooney was in a clinical mood today as he hit four goals as United went top of the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Hull City at Old Trafford.

Rooney took his goal scoring tally for the season to an impressive 19 – a career-best total only mid-way through the campaign. Having scored early on in the match with an early opener he then had to wait until the end to demolish the Tigers, who stay in the drop zone after the loss.

It was not all good news for United though as the returning Rio Ferdinand, could be in hot water with the FA after his elbow on Craig Fagan was missed by the referee.
