Man Utd 4 – 0 Stoke

Four Premiership titles in a row wasn’t to be as Man Utd beat Stoke quite comprehensively at 4-0 but weren’t aided by Wigan who needed to beat Chelsea.

Goals in the first half from Darren Fletcher and an ever-reliable Ryan Giggs plus a Higginbottam own goal and Park header in the second half ensured that the Red Devils did their bit to keep the title chase alive but Wigans’ capitulation against Chelsea meant it was not to be.

Man Utd 3 – 1 Tottenham

Two clinical penalties from Ryan Giggs and a great finish from Nani helped United return to the Premier League summit as they beat the in-form Tottenham 3-1 at Old Trafford. The victory puts United two points clear of Chelsea who face Stoke on Sunday.

United were again without Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand while Neville was replaced by Rafael in defence.

Carling Cup 1st Leg: Man City 2 – 1 Man Utd

A combination of terrible refereeing from Mike Dean and striker Carlos Tevez ensured Manchester City go to Old Trafford in 8 days time with a 2-1 lead. Two-goal Carlos Tevez came back to haunt United (as returning players invariably do) following a 2-1 Carling Cup semi-final first leg victory at Eastlands.

Tevez, who quit Old Trafford in the summer, made it nine goals in his last six City starts and 16 for the season as he proved to be the main threat for City after a sluggish start.

Giggs wins coveted BBC Sports Personality 2009 award

Ryan Giggs fought off competition from Jenson Button, the current Formula One champion to win the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year award on Sunday night.

After picking up his latest award the 36 year old Man Utd legend said “I’d just like to thank the BBC and everyone who voted for me. This is unbelievable. This is a shock as you can tell by the speech I’ve prepared! I’ve been lucky enough to win many things in my career. I’ve played with some great players, the greatest manager who’s ever lived, and the greatest club in the world. But this is up there. I grew up watching this TV programme. To be up there is unbelievable”

The award, the latest in a long line recently was in recognition of amassing a record 11 Premiership title trophies, making more appearances for his club than any other player and for consistently playing at a high level year in year out. This award comes close after collecting the PFA Player of The Year award earlier in the year.

The Sports Personality award has been awarded controversially to unworthy winners in the past but no one can deny Giggs is a worthy winner. His current excellent club form has also prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to offering him a new contract.

Now if only we could clone him and have a Giggs in our side for decades to come!
