Man Utd 2 – 0 Tottenham Hotspur

A debatable late goal from Nani added to a 1st-half Nemanja Vidic header ensured a 2-0 win for Man Utd. It meant Tottenham’s 17 year wait for an away win against a top four team continues.

United captain Vidic was on hand in the 31st minute to power in a strong header from Nani’s free-kick. Nani was at the centre of the controversial second goal minutes from the end when Gomes placed the ball onto the ground for what he perceived was a free-kick. Nani was unsure whether to take a shot and seemed to look at the referee before slotting the ball in. This sparked protests from the Tottenham players at referee Mark Clattenburg.

Man Utd 3 -0 West Ham

United moved into 3rd spot thanks to some 3-0 victory over West Ham United at Old Trafford. Goals from Wayne Rooney, Nani and Dimitar Berbatov gave the Red Devils victory which leaves the Hammers bottom of the table after 3 matches.

Sir Alex Ferguson made 3 adjustments to the team who drew at Fulham the previous match with Nani, Giggs and Rooney coming in for Park, Valencia and Hernandez.

The visitors’ defensive formation made it tough for United to create any good chances in the opening stages of the game. Despite this United continued to exert pressure and within the 24th minute Nani was denied by the crossbar. A lengthy cross area pass from Vidic was aimed at Berbatov, who beautifully back-heeled the ball directly to Nani who struck a 20 yard shot. Robert Green couldn’t get a clear hold of the ball but he managed to get enough on it to push it onto the crossbar.

Bolton 0 – 4 Man Utd

A Dimitar Berbatov-inspired brace moved United back to the Premier League summit and was the perfect response to Chelsea’s 7-1 drubbing of Aston Villa earlier in the afternoon.

In the absense of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand it could have been a difficult game for Sir Alex Gergusons side but Berbatov took on the challenge. He was in masterful form, playing as a lone striker as he scored twice in United’s 4-0 victory against Bolton.

For over thirty minutes of the game Bolton worked hard and made a game of it. This all changed when J Lloyd Samuel inadvertedly placed Ryan Giggs’ 38th minute cross into his own right-hand corner of the net.

From this point on it was Berbatov and Nani that lead the show and staked their claim for a starting role in the important Champions League game against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Man Utd 5 – 0 Portsmouth

In a see-saw season for the title United reclaimed top spot in the Premier League emphatically crushing Portsmouth 5-0 at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney was again the orchestrator as he put United in front with his 23rd goal of the season. Anthony Vanden Borre’s then turned the ball into his own net to give United a comfortable lead going into half-time.

Michael Carrick’s shot looped up off Richard Hughes and beat David James for another own goal, before Berbatov added a clinical fourth and Marc Wilson volleyed into his own net (yes, that’s right three own goals in the game!) to complete the rout.

Arsenal 1 – 3 Man Utd

United narrowed the gap on League leaders Chelsea as the champions stormed to an impressive 3-1 win against title rivals Arsenal.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side stunned Arsenal with two stunning goals in four minutes in the first half at the Emirates and never looked like surrendering their lead.

Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia tipped Nani’s chipped cross cum shot into his own net before Rooney put the champions in cruise control with his 100th Premier League goal.

Park Ji-Sung added United’s third goal in the second half to allow United to close the gap to one point between Chelsea.

Rooney, yet again, showed the predatory instincts that make him, the most lethal forward in the world on current form, aided by Portugal winger Nani, who ran the Arsenal defence ragged with a superb display.

CL – Wolfsburg 1 – 3 Man Utd

An injury-ravaged Manchester United rode their luck a bit last night but finished as Group B leaders after another Michael Owen hat-trick in Germany!

 Match Highlights

United began the game with Patrice Evra as the sole regular first-team defender assisted by Park at right back with Carrick and Fletcher partnering in central defence.

As things stood before the match Wolfsburg needed a win whilst United needed a point to seal the top spot in the group.

Wolfsburg were buoyed by an unfamiliar United defence with three players playing out of position and duly cranked up the pressure from kick-off. They should have taken the lead in the 17th minute when Barzagli headed over the bar from five yards out despite being unmarked. Within minutes the hosts spurned another excellent chance when again, an unmarked Wolfsburg player, this time Misimovic, struck a weak header clear of the bar.
