CL: Man Utd 4 – 0 AC Milan

For United legend David Beckham there was no fairytale Old Trafford return as United cruised into the Champions League quarter-finals after a 4-0 win over AC Milan.

Rooney again was the chief tormentor as he scored a goal in each half brining his goal tally for the season upto 30 and killing any chance Milan had of Beckham leading them to victory on his former stomping ground.

Instead, it was United who killed the game as Ji-Sung Park ran onto Scholes’ pass to further widen the gap before Darren Fletcher headed a fourth near the end to truly humiliate Milan.

Beckham, as predicted had been left on the bench as Milan seeked the two goals they needed without reply to progress. However, with Rooney back in the side a Milan clean-sheet would have been extremely hard to come by.

His two goals in the San Siro three weeks ago grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat for United. His brace was repeated yet again despite Ronaldinho stating before the game they had watched videos of Rooney and figured out how to stop him. Better teams than Milan will struggle to contain Rooney this season .

Gary Neville provided the assist for the first, his pinpoint right-wing cross was met by Rooney who soared between defenders and yet again scored with his head..

It was his seventh header in a row and keeps him on target to match or better Ronaldos 42 goal haul of two years ago that helped net him the World Player of The Year. No one would begrudge Rooney the title this year based on his performances.

Rooney never one to sit back in a match had his and United’s second goal within 54 seconds of the restart.

Nani provided the opportunity having sped from the halfway line and then producing a brilliant curling cross with the outside of his boot.

With the game out of reach and big games ahead Rooney was substituted for Berbatov.

The third goal saw Scholes play in Park who shot clinically.

Leonardo introduced Beckham as he now had nothing to lose.

The response as expected was a standing ovation.

Fletcher nodded home a fourth after a brilliant pass by Raphael that just needed contact.

The members of the Glazer family where there to watch the match and it would have been noted by them that United legend Beckham put on the green-and-gold scarf round his neck as he made his way down the tunnel. As if the fans needed any more reason to idolise him. Rooney has already replaced Beckham as a fans favourite which is some achievement but fully justified giving his all-round performance.
