Bayern Munich did a 1999 Champions League role reversal with a dramatic 2-1 victory against Manchester United with Ivica Olic scoring with the last kick of the game. Franck Ribery’s deflected second half free-kick had leveled Wayne Rooney’s early effort in the Champions League quarter-final first leg match at the Allianz Arena.
Olic’s extremely late goal and an ankle injury to the in-form Wayne Rooney will give United manager Sir Alex Ferguson sleepless nights ahead of next Wednesday’s second leg and the crunch weekend game against Chelsea.
It took Martin Demichelis only 12 seconds to take out Nani, bringing .him down near the corner flag From the free-kick, United got the perfect start.
Nani’s cross was deflected off the wall and Wayne Rooney had all the time he needed to volley into the net beyond Hans-Joerg Butt.
United were not content to sit on the lead and they could have doubled it when Nani ran at the Bayern center-backs and get a hurried left foot strike in, which was dragged just wide of the near post.
Soon after, Nani was unlucky again. On the right wing, the winger’s cross was nearer the keeper than he’d have hoped, but it almost dropped into the net, scraping the top of the crossbar before bouncing to safety.
Bayern then spurned their best opportunity of the game. Ribery ran down the left and crossed into the box. Van Der Sar’s unconvincing punch dropped for Altintop, but the shot was scuffed and Olic was unable to make an easy connection near the goal-line.
Bayern started the second half as United had started the first. Uniteds’ multitude of misplaced passes were giving the home side opportunities, and when Patrice Evra of all people, gave away a sloppy pass, Altintop turned in the box whilst losing two markers before his shot was saved by Van der Sar.
Towards the last 15 minutes of the match Bayern finally got their breakthrough, all be a lucky one. Gary Neville needlessly conceded a free-kick free-kick just outside the box, but Riberys’ set piece was a lame one. Only when it struck Wayne Rooney on the end of the wall, did it divert past Van Der Sar into the net.
United almost regained the lead when Giggs whipped in a cross from the left, which Vidic met with a powerful header which thumped back off the bar.
It was Bayern who ended up getting the winner though. With the Red Devils’ defence looking out of sorts, Olic waltzed past three men in the box before placing a left-footeded shot past Van der Sar. Just as worrying for United was the sight of Wayne Rooney hopping off the pitch after the striker had picked up a nasty looking injury to his right ankle in trying to curtail the attack which led to Olic’s crucial strike.
With two big games that could define Uniteds’ season in the next eight days Sir Alex Ferguson will have an uncomfortable few nights sweating on Rooneys’ fitness.
