Bolton 0 – 4 Man Utd

A Dimitar Berbatov-inspired brace moved United back to the Premier League summit and was the perfect response to Chelsea’s 7-1 drubbing of Aston Villa earlier in the afternoon.

In the absense of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand it could have been a difficult game for Sir Alex Gergusons side but Berbatov took on the challenge. He was in masterful form, playing as a lone striker as he scored twice in United’s 4-0 victory against Bolton.

For over thirty minutes of the game Bolton worked hard and made a game of it. This all changed when J Lloyd Samuel inadvertedly placed Ryan Giggs’ 38th minute cross into his own right-hand corner of the net.

From this point on it was Berbatov and Nani that lead the show and staked their claim for a starting role in the important Champions League game against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

The majority of United fans know how exquisite Berbatov’s touch is but most pleasing for Ferguson would have been his striker’s killer instinct, which has let him down a little in the past.

He reacted quickly when Jaaskelainen’s parried Darren Fletcher’s shot in the 69th minute and was there to side-foot home to put United 2-0 up and put the game beyond Bolton..

He then got his second goal 10 minutes later when on 78 minutes Nani terrorised Bolton’s defence and put the ball into the area for Berbatov to place into the net with his side foot.

It was Nani again that setup the final goal, again proving too much for the opposition to handle. Having made space for himself he placed the ball into the danger area in the box to set up Darron Gibson with a powerful finish, which came with the midfielder’s first touch after coming on a substitute.

It was a great performance from Ferguson’s men, who moved a point clear of Chelsea and four ahead of Arsenal, who could only draw 1-1 with Birmingham after a Almunia error in the final minute of the game.

The victory was also achieved thanks to Edwin van der Sar who rolled back the years with two world-class saves in the first half. It’s hard to believe he’ll be turning 40 this year based on todays performance.

United now go into two of their biggest games of the season with Bayern Munich on Tuesday and then at the weekend Chelsea visiting. Could the season be decided at the weekend? Time will tell.
